Portland International Airport - All Information on Portland International Airport (PDX)

Portland International Airport is the largest airport in the state of Oregon, USA. It is a joint civil-military airport that accounts for 90% of the passenger air travel and 95% of the air cargo in the state. The airport is located just south of the Columbia River within the city limits of Portland and it serves the Portland metropolitan area.

Downtown Portland is located approximately 10.5 mi/ 17 km from the airport. The airport’s IATA code is PDX and the ICAO code is KPDX. It offers direct flights and connections to most major airports within the United States as well as non-stop international flights to Canada, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands and South Korea.

The Portland City Council purchased the land that the airport sits on in 1936 after it had become clear that the first Portland airport, Swan Island Municipal Airport, was no longer sufficient enough and two runways able to serve the modern aircrafts of the 1940’s were operational by 1941. The new airport was given the name Portland-Columbia Airport and the airfield was used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.

The entire airport grounds were flooded for several months during and following the Vanport Flood in 1948.

Over the years there have been several terminals in use and new runways were constructed and the terminal seen today was first built in 1959 and has since undergone renovations, expansions and upgrades to keep up with the demand. Today the terminal is H-shaped with a main terminal and concourses giving it its shape.

Today the airport has 4 concourses; B, C, D and E with all international arrivals taking place in Concourse D.

The terminal is divided into a South and a North part with Concourses B and C in the South Terminal and Concourses D and E in the North Terminal. Concourse B has 2 gates, Concourse C has 23 gates, Concourse D has 15 gates and Concourse E has 12 gates.

The Concourse Connector that used to connect the Concourses on Airside is currently closed due to expansion.

The airport has two asphalt runways and one concrete runway. The two asphalt runways are 6,000 ft/1,829 m and 9,825 ft/ 2,995 m respectively while the concrete runway is 11,000 ft/3,353 m long.

The airport saw 7,084,543 passengers come through it in 2020, a decrease from 2019’s 19,891,365 passengers. As with all airports the decrease was due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airport is owned and operated by the Port of Portland.
